A TOMES Pedigree aims to show both ‘genealogy’ and ‘family history,’ vis; for each person shown (although in many cases, utopian):

  • Date and place of birth (usually though, in early generations, that of baptism -  as that is all that is known).
  • Where applicable, the date and place of marriage.
  • Again, where applicable, the date and place of death (again though, in early generations, that of burial, as that too is also all that is known).
  • Occupations/professions and short notes of items of interest about the person.

THE ‘CODING’ SYSTEM

Each Pedigree listed in this website has been given a five letter code, usually based on the place of origin, or main known facts about the Pedigree (eg LONGM for Long Marston, BIRMH for Birmingham, USANY for New York, USA).  However in some cases furrher research has taken a pedigree ‘backwards’ but the Code may still refer to the known place of origin when that pedigree was first compiled.

CONVENTIONS.     Conventions used are:

  • Surnames are shown in UPPER CASE, forenames in Lower Case.

  • The surname is only shown for the first child of a marriage; unless sources give different spellings for different children, in which case these are shown (often a common occurrence in earlier generations due to illiteracy).

  • Where a date & place of birth and death are known these are shown. However where they are not, but baptism and burial/cremation details are known, these are shown.

  • Marriage dates in earlier editions of pedigrees were shown under the ‘=‘ symbol between the spouses’ names with the place/district (in brackets) at the end of, and under, the text for a couple.  Later editions/new pedigrees now show both date & place/district together (in brackets) at the end of, and under, the text for a couple.

  • A [No], in square brackets, indicates a Note (normally at the bottom of a page).

  • Dates are shown in the UK, rather than USA, format, ie 8 Jan 1940 rather than Jan 8, 1940.
